Artist Statement

The first sculpture is about plus-sized bodies in society. I wanted this piece to recognize the words used by society to put fat people down while showing body acceptance. The base was painted black, then painted hateful words in dark grey so that “I AM WORTHY” was the overall message and stood out against all the other words. The crown represents beauty pageants and societies’ beauty standards, and it was placed on top of the bust’s head to state that we’re all beautiful and worthy of love. The second piece, anxiety erasing, is about ADHD and how anxiety slowly drains the creativity and beauty out of the person. White is sterilizing and represents how hopeless an individual may feel while experiencing anxiety, unable to recognize the beauty in being different and unique.

Artist Statement

This project is in response to Franz Kafka’s short story, The Metamorphosis. As I read this story, I imagined Gregor’s room as dark, slightly worn and rumpled which I kept in mind as I was making this piece. Gregor was told to have been a salesman, the one his family relied on financially which I interpreted for his room to appear middle-class and have handmade blankets or furniture that has been passed down from family members. To achieve the worn effect on the paper, I would crumple paper multiple times before using it in different techniques to make the objects. This is also how I found that by crumpling the paper before adding water, increased the effectiveness of the glue within the copy paper. To symbolize Gregor’s character, I connected him with the story of Zacchaeus, a rich tax collector who climbed a tree so he could see Jesus over the crowd. The ladder represents Gregor as a salesman and how Jesus loves everyone even when society rejects them.

Blue side (Edward): blue gatorade, mint mentos, silverware, glassware, paper doily.

Red side (Jacob): red powerade, hot tamales candy, red bowl and plate, silverware, paper napkin, glass jar.

Artist Statement

The movie that inspired this project was Twilight; specifically, the dynamic between Edward and Jacob, or rather the differences between them. I utilized certain items/placements like fancy glass cups, a dessert spoon placed at the top, and a doily placemat to allude towards Edward’s economic standing. Stephanie Meyers chose to describe all vampires as white and having extreme wealth. For Jacob’s side, I used an old queso jar (which I’ve repurposed) as a cup for the red powerade, the silverware, napkin, red bowl and plate were all chosen to insinuate Jacob’s economic standing which Stephanie Meyers depicted as middle/lower class. The research packet helped me narrow down my narrative and how to best represent the unspoken bias; red and blue oppose each other temperature wise which is also how Edward and Jacob biologically repel each other. Red in this project symbolizes life, warmth, purity while blue represented death, cold, damnation which is why Edward and Jacob fought each other over Bella.
